Western Washington University Cancels Classes for Hate Speech

Classes were cancelled Tuesday, November 24th. for Western Washington University due to Alleged Hate speech on Social media.

The college president sent out a notice.

…we are not talking the merely insulting, rude, offensive commentary that trolls and various other lowlifes seem free to spew, willy nilly, although there has been plenty of that, too.  No, this was hate speech.

I will note that people are free to spew that offensive commentary he is speaking about that he says comes from trolls and various other lowlifes. The first amendment of the constitution of the United States protects that type of speech. It even protects hate speech. So the trolls just don’t “seem free” to speak, they ARE free to do such a thing.

The president of the university does not indicate whether the speech was threatening or not. He only talks about it being hate speech of which he appears to be of the belief that what they did was probably a crime.

These are likely crimes in my view (and in the view of those in the criminal justice system we immediately involved).

Law enforcement has assured him that there is no threat.

Law enforcement has advised me of their assessment that, as the situation is currently understood, there is no threat to general campus safety.

However the president appears to be of the belief that there is a threat.

However, and I trust you stand with me on this: a threat to any one of us is an attack on all of us.

I was unable to find any evidence of this hate speech as of right now. So without that evidence, it is not possible to make a determination as to whether it is an actual threat or just hate speech as the university president is describing. The president seems to be insistent upon a criminal investigation and prepare the school to demonstrate outrage for the alleged hate speech.

We need time to press the criminal investigation and to plan how, as a campus, we will come together to demonstrate our outrage, to listen to each other, and to support each other.

The president also seems to indicate that he wants to go after what he calls trolls and lowlifes.

Have no doubt: this is not a capitulation to those I described as trolls and lowlifes.  We are going after them.

I have seen a twitter post of what appears to be a professor “Imagining” what the hate speech could have been.

Based upon what the president is saying and that twitter post, I am at most skeptical about the alleged hate speech, and at the least skeptical that there was any actual threat.
