I didn’t really want to get all opinionated with my website, one of my goals being to actually inform people of various things going on. Ask questions that the mainstream media don’t ask, or inform people of something the mainstream media may not normally apprise people about. However, the whole asking questions thing or informing thing can become impossible when the people you are speaking to decide to gag you.
I am not meaning in a literal sense, I am talking a more figurative sense. Well, maybe it is actually literal. Maybe as you read this article, you can decide for yourself.
I am a pro-rights kind of guy. Heck, I believe a lion is a great symbol as to what I believe as far as the rights of individuals. They believe working together is good, but are OK going alone if necessary. You don’t mess with a lion unless you want to risk being mangled.
Anyways, what I wanted to get at is that I believe in the right to bear arms. I am of the opinion that it is a fact that every piece of gun control legislation that has been passed is a violation of that right. Well, not just violating that right, but other rights that we all hold as well.
Now, the problem I have as a journalist is that having that belief can shut down individuals from listening to anything I have to say or from answering any of my questions. So it is difficult to decide whether what I believe should be my standard I wave around, or if I should avoid showing my flag in order to get my information across or in order to gather the information I am looking for.
Though, it would seem that waving my standard may just cause the occasional individual to plug their ears. Just means one person doesn’t care to listen to or answer my questions. However, it’s possible some person may actually gag me instead of plug their ears.
This is where it is chilling for me, the idea that a person would gag you as opposed to plugging their ears. It is really dangerous for journalists to be gagged because that means the information they are seeking or the information they possess is not being distributed to those who likely need to hear it. We’re not talking about one person refusing to listen to what a journalist has to say, we’re talking about entire groups of people who are shielded from what a journalist may have to say. Groups of people who actually may be interested in what the journalist has to say no longer have the option to hear from that journalist.
The power to gag journalist and shield people from journalists is a chilling and dangerous idea. I do imagine that is one reason why the first amendment was written. The government has violated that plenty, it has it’s legalized gags in place. However my writing of this article isn’t quite because of government gagging journalists, it’s more towards the kinds of gagging that advocacy groups do to those of differing opinion.

Lately, my desire to inform people has somewhat increased. It is frustrating to me some of the basic things people don’t even think about or understand. It’s frustrating to me that many groups only focus on doing things one way and don’t consider looking for alternative solutions to alleged problems.
So I decided that I would try creating another Facebook account to post on gun control advocacy pages, but be somewhat more discreet and appear to be vaguely supportive of their cause. That way I could maybe strike up a conversation with their supporters and even get questions answered that I have wanted answered.
I got a few posts in on some of the pages. One of my favorites was a post that talked about how the NRA allegedly uses fear to promote gun rights and I made a comment on the lines of “Yeah, it is frustrating when people use fear to get things done.”
It wasn’t long before some of the pages started banning me from them. Again, I wasn’t being confrontational, I was almost as gun control advocate looking as I could be without being the extreme of saying things like “guns should be banned” or “the NRA kills children”, those kinds of things. I was mostly just inquisitive, however that still got me banned on my alternate account.
I still do have the ability to comment on a few gun control advocate group pages, but I am gagged by the mainstream gun control advocate pages.
I may just have to resort to calling them up on the phone and hope they’ll answer my questions.
I am just concerned about the people out there that may not be getting all the information that is available to them. These gun control advocacy groups advocate for policies without completely informing their supporters and they are gagging those who try to challenge or inform them and their supporters on what is being advocated. The idea that the people supportive of those groups are being shielded is chilling to me because they are essentially taking away an alternate view and taking away the ability of their supporters to make an informed decision on policies and what they believe.
