Following the Money

As you may already know, there has been some news reports about the millions of dollars donated to the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility group. These donations come from a few rich people such as Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg, and Nick Hanauer.

The Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility website lists their top five contributers at the bottom of their website. These contributers being Nicolas Hanauer, Melinda Gates, William Gates III, Paul Allen, and Connier Ballmer.

This has prompted Alan Gottlieb to issue a challenge to the top donors to a debate on the issue as is indicated in this article from the Examiner:

After days of waiting with no reply from billionaire Bill Gates in his challenge to debate the merits, or lack thereof, of Initiative 594, gun rights advocate Alan Gottlieb today upped the ante, offering to face both Gates and anti-gun former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, another billionaire backing the initiative.

Many news articles don’t always make it clear where the information they got came from. Such as the million dollar donations from Bloomberg and Gates. The information on these donations can actually be found on Washington state’s public disclosure website at www.pdc.wa.gov.

A person can go onto the website and find the forms that groups file to disclose their donations and expenditures.

Looking for WA Alliance for Gun Responsibility on the Public Disclosure website , you can see that one of their latest reports, dated 8-22-2014, shows that Bill Gates made a donation of $500,000, Melinda Gates made a donation of $500,000, and Nick Hanauer made a donation of $1,000,000.

The Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, a Bloomberg organization, has also donated $1,000,000 to the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility.

The total amount of money raised by Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility is currently $7,084,122.76 and they have spent $2,248,441.86 according to their filings.

According to the Washington public disclosure website, Every Town for Gun Safety Action Fund for I-594 has raised and spent $13,856.30.

The group, Protect our Gun Rights, which is advocating I-591 has raised $1,066,230.72 and spent $773,217.73 according to their filings.

The group, National Rifle Association of America Washingtonians opposed to I-594 has raised $25,000 and spent $17,514.42 according to their filings.

There appears to be another group against I-594 known as Washington Citizens Against Regulatory Excess that has raised $63,612.27 and spent $62,969.30 according to their filings.

The biggest donor of I-591 appears to be the Washington Arms Collectors which has donated a total of $510,574.07.

The largest donation from an individual to Protect our Gun Rights appears to be $1,500.

The largest donation from an individual to Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility is $1,000,000 putting that individual at a total of $1,470,000 in donations.

The majority of money raised for Protect our gun rights comes from the Washington Arms Collectors, Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, and the Gun Owners Action League.

The public Disclosure website gives information such as name, donation amount, occupation, employer, city, and state of the group or individual that makes the donations.

It is one of the reasons Gottlieb is able to make his challenge to Gates and Bloomberg as their names are attached to their donations.
